Congratulations to CoreOptics, an optical networking company based in Germany and the U.S.A.

Cisco purchased the company in late May for $99 million because of their ability to improve the infrastructure required by online video and cloud-hosting services.

CoreOptics.com runs on Joomla and uses ChronoForms and JoomlaWatch.

Earlier in this series we mentioned that FINA, the world governing body for aquatic sports (swimming, diving etc) uses Joomla. Well, that's far from the only such organization running Joomla. This week we'll introduce you to Pentathlon.org, the website of the UIPM which is the governing body of Modern Pentathlon. The site is a showcase for this key Olympic sport which involves constestants in swimming, running, shooting, fencing and horse-riding.

The site uses GTranslate for automatic Google translations, and relies on 247.tv for live streaming of events inside Joomla.

The Joomla Extensions Directory reached a milestone today, topping the 5000 listings mark.  That means more than 5000 extensions are available to the community as open source and GPL.  A few years ago, members of the community had questioned the ability of the JED to thrive while only allowing GPL extensions to be listed.

I am proud to report that the JED continues to thrive, as well as the commercial extension developers who have embraced the GPL business models that are keeping the Joomla community rich with choices.

Recently, some of our longest holdouts of alternate licenses have rounded out the offerings by switching to the GPL license and returning to the JED.  We're happy to be able to once again support these extensions and their developers.

In fact, the extension that broke the 5000 listing mark was an add-on for a previously non-GPL product.  Without that change, this listing would not have been possible.  Congratulations to Styleware for that listing!

As Joomla transitions into version 1.6 and beyond, we are on a very firm footing of resources for our community.  With those resources are 150,000 JED users and the reviews and votes that go with them.  It's a huge project, a huge resource and it's thanks to each and every member of the Joomla community.

We in the extensions directory want to thank every developer whose listings make up that 5004, because without you we couldn't be here today.

The Port of San Diego

PortofSanDiego.org was selected as an "Official Honoree" in the 14th annual Webby Awards, which recognizes the best work displayed worldwide on the Web. That places its work alongside six othew media organizations: New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CBS and National Geographic. Find out more here.

Glenn Batuyong, part of winning web team, says that the site uses Joomla 1.5, utilizes a custom-built template based on Beez and incorporates many 3rd party plugins like Disqus, YOOcarousel, and YOOslider.

The Port is a public agency and its website averages about 35,000 visits and 95,000 pageviews per month.

We’re delighted to introduce a Joomla! Development Sponsor at the Platinum level: India and UK-based web developers Fullestop. A nine-year old company with several blue-chip clients, Fullestop provides full-service web solutions that include custom Joomla! development. One of the company’s primary reasons for deepening its involvement with Joomla! is to become even more hands-on with the project, providing programming expertise and learning more about the project in the process.

Fullestop specializes in everything web-design – from development, design, e-commerce, cms, hosting, and programming to branding and consulting. Fullestop is an outspoken fan of the open source movement, and future plans include developing both commercial and non-commercial contributions to the Joomla! project.

About this Blog

This is the sixth in a series of blog posts about major Joomla websites and the developers who built them.

This week we're talking with Paul Hosking about his role with iTWire.com, a major Australian technology website.

1) Hi Paul. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Paul HoskingI'm 44 years old and I'm the Site Director and a co-founder of iTWire.com, I work remote in a very picturesque part of the Victorian country side, Mount Macedon with my family, wife, three kids and a dog. I graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1994 with a degree in music, media and one semester of computer studies (introduction to Microsoft office on a Mac). I first came in contact with the internet in 1995 whilst working in a Media department at the University of Melbourne, my mind was blown ... ever since then I've been hooked. By 1998 I was teaching first years how to code html, pretty basic stuff but it wasn't long before one of my drop outs came back to tell me that he'd got a job in web design based on several weeks of my course and that he was earning 4 times what I was. I resigned that week, got a client and started making web sites freelance. It was challenging work and hard to make a living when starting out. I eventually learnt how to build pretty good flat html sites. That worked for a while though the business model was straining; I build site, you pay me, you want change, you pay me and so on. Not great, there had to be a better way.

At that time I started to see sites appearing that had "amazing" technology like a search box. How do they do that? I thought. View source, umm what's this Mambo thing? Life, work and web sites were never going to be the same. From then on I built every site within a content management system (CSM), to varying levels of success and built a new business model around user updates and open source CMS. This is how I came to build the first iteration of iTWire, The Beerfiles (IT news blog) which first introduced me to online news. Since then I've moved further and further away from development becoming purely a high level user. I have found my skills are devoted to geting the best people possible to help me with development and hosting. Even though I still do CSS layout most days, I now avoid cutting php code as much as possible.

Congratulations to Ticken.nl, the Joomla-based winner of the “best IT startup” title at the annual Thuiswinkel Awards ceremony in the Netherlands.

Martin Beijer, the site's founder, created the site to teach students how to type. Students get a personalised reporting and statistics system, ratings, training flash games, parent control, certification and many other features. In addition to the trophy, Martin won almost €90,000 in prize money.

The Pandora console is a gaming and PC handheld device unlike any other.

Its features are based on the suggestions and requests of hundreds of people on their support forums. It also runs on an Open Source Operation Sytem. They use a version of Linux with a few of their own changes and they're released those back to their community.

The natural choice for such an Open Source pioneer? Joomla. At their main site http://www.open-pandora.org they're also using Joomfish to allow easy translation of the site into German and Turkish.

In an Internet landscape full of "what I ate for breakfast" posts, here's my semi-regular dose of transparency and accountability to the Joomla community as to my activities as Open Source Matters (OSM) President. (English | Español)

The past few weeks have passed by so quickly!  With so much going on in the Joomla! world, I didn't have a chance to pause, reflect, and communicate my happenings to the community.  Here's what has been keeping me busy during the second half of April and beginning of May.
